sour cherries

There’s sour grapes, and other strange fruit, but this is sour cherries.

Never knew what cherry picking was, until Hungary. Something about the climate, in the Carpathian Basin. This month, we’ve been stuffing our faces with cherries. And to go by what’s coming out of the dogs bottom – all pits and stalks – he’s in on the act, as well.

If you don’t like eating the whole cherry, you become a dab hand at removing stalks and pits.  Pit spitting is a natural extension of this skill, for competitive folks.

Two types of cherry tree in the yard. Sweet and sour, like a recipe for Chinese. But sour cherry soup is traditional Hungarian, served cold as a starter or dessert.  Such a treat on hot summer days!
